Wrist Pain

Often, those who work with their hands and wrists repetitively encounter wrist pain. Actually, about 30 to 45 percent of manual laborers report hand and wrist issues. Up to 73 percent of sports athletes in wrist-loading athletics—like tennis, gymnastics, rowing, volleyball, hockey, and judo—could generate wrist pain, too.

Pain of the hands and wrist could indicate degeneration and inflammation in the tendons and sheath that surrounds them. In some athletes, this might be a sign of injury from over use. Chiropractors may help individuals suffering from wrist pain and these symptoms:

  • Strains and sprains
  • Swelling of tendons
  • Nerve entrapment, like carpal tunnel syndrome
  • De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis, pain linked to recurring thumb motion
  • Trigger finger—the diminished capability of a finger to completely extend due to high friction of the tendon sliding in its sleeve

Our Solution

When patients come in with any of these possible conditions, it is important to determine the underlying cause of the pain. Frequently, the problem is multifaceted as well, involving issues with the fascia as well as inactivated muscles. Our strategy for taking care of people with wrist and hand pain starts with a thorough evaluation of the musculature in that area. Any muscles that are found to be “turned off” can be treated with the Muscle Activation Technique to effectively “turn them back on.” At that point, the muscles can be strengthened with special exercises to regain the strength that may have been lost while they were inactive.

Other treatments may also be necessary to address all the causes of the pain. Nerve entrapment, De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis, and trigger finger are all examples of issues that can be dramatically improved by treatments such as myofascial release.
